Spotify finally did something about the flood of AI-generated sludge clogging up its platform. They’re rolling out a “Verified by Spotify” badge — a green checkmark on artist profiles that signals a real person, not a bot, is behind the music.
At least for now, the rules are clear: if you’re an AI persona or your profile primarily pumps out AI-generated tracks, you don’t get the badge. That’s a relief. I’ve seen way too many playlists polluted with generic, soulless tracks that sound like they were churned out by a Markov chain on autopilot.

But Spotify isn’t slamming the door shut forever. They said, and I quote, “the concept of artist authenticity is complex and quickly evolving.” That’s corporate-speak for “we’re leaving a crack open for when AI inevitably gets good enough that we can’t tell the difference.” I don’t blame them — the line between human and machine in music is already blurry, and it’s only going to get worse.
You can’t just waltz in and get verified, though. Spotify requires “consistent” activity and some undefined level of real-world presence. I suspect that means having a history of releases, maybe a social footprint, or even a label backing you. It’s a bit of a black box, which makes me nervous. We’ve seen verification systems on Twitter and Instagram turn into bureaucratic nightmares or, worse, get gamed by the wrong people.
The timing is interesting. This comes after a year where AI-generated music exploded — from fake Drake songs to entire albums credited to nonexistent artists that somehow racked up millions of streams. Spotify’s old moderation was basically a whack-a-mole game. This badge is a more proactive move, but it’s not a silver bullet.
My take? This is a good first step, but the real test will be how they handle appeals, edge cases, and the inevitable flood of AI music that’s indistinguishable from human work. If they’re too strict, they’ll alienate legitimate experimental artists. Too lax, and the badge becomes meaningless. For now, I’ll take the green checkmark as a small win against the noise.
